Mady Schutzman is a writer, scholar, and theater artist. She has published her work in several journals including Black Clock, The Drama Review, Women and Performance, Theatre Topics, and The Journal of Medical Humanities, as well as in several critical anthologies. She is author of The Real Thing: Performance, Hysteria, and Advertising (Wesleyan), Radical Doubt: the Joker System, after Boal (Routledge) and, most recently, Behold the Elusive Night Parrot (Beverly Books, L.A.). For over 25 years, Mady has worked as a free lance practitioner and scholar of Augusto Boal鈥檚 Theatre of the Oppressed (TO). She worked with Boal extensively in Brazil and the U.S. and has conducted TO workshops throughout the U.S. and Canada. She is co-editor with Jan Cohen-Cruz of two collections of essays about Boal鈥檚 work: Playing Boal and A Boal Companion, both with Routledge. Schutzman鈥檚 current work focuses on ventriloquism, ritual, puppetry, and magic and how these modalities can be harnessed as forms of resistance, community-building, and transformation. She is Faculty Emerita at CalArts and currently teaches at 51社区.
